What will the weather be like on my Copper Canyon trip?

The weather in Copper Canyon varies considerably. A common saying is, “If you want to know about the weather in Copper Canyon tomorrow, ask me tomorrow!” Pack clothing that can be worn in layers to accommodate daily temperature fluctuations and climate control on trains and coaches. Include a hat for protection from the sun.

Winter nights are chilly, and temperatures can drop below freezing. In the mountains, it is not uncommon to wake up to snow on the ground but have the temperature rise to 65 degrees during the day. You will not need heavy winter garments, but pack warm nightwear, a warm jacket, light gloves and a cap or earmuffs.

Spring and autumn days are pleasant. Daily temperatures average in the 70s in the mountains. Chihuahua and coastal areas such as El Fuerte will be warmer. The rainy season extends from July to October.

Is the water safe to drink?

Tap water in Mexico, with the exception of Chihuahua City, should be avoided. Each hotel provides purified drinking water; bring a canteen or large bottle for refills, as you will be responsible for carrying your own drinking water. All beverages and ice served are made with purified water. Also, salads and fruits have been washed with purified water.

What kind of food will we eat in Mexico?

Breakfasts are continental, such as cereal, fruit and toast, and usually include a regional specialty including huevos rancheros or cactus fruit. Mexican meals typically feature ingredients such as rice, beans, corn, cheese, tortillas and chicken, beef or fish. You will have the opportunity to enjoy a variety of local entrees. Most meals will be served buffet- or family-style.

I have a special diet (vegetarian, diabetic, food allergies).  Will I be able to eat with the group?

Contact DMEC with your concerns as soon as possible before your program. Although we cannot guarantee special dietary requests, we will do our best to make sure your meals are satisfactory. It is always a good idea to bring snacks such as peanut butter and crackers in case a particular request is unable to be granted.

Do I need to bring an adapter for my electric shaver/hairdryer/CPAP machine?

Your electrical gadgets will work in Mexico with no adapters.

Are there cultural differences of which I need to be aware?

Many of the indigenous Tarahumara do not wish to be photographed, especially without permission. Please ask before taking their pictures. Craft vendors will usually be happy to pose with their homemade items if you make a purchase.

What is the currency exchange rate?

Exact rates fluctuate on a daily basis. The approximate peso-to-dollar rate is 10:1; 10 Mexican pesos are worth one US dollar.

Will I need to exchange money before I go to Mexico?

You will have the opportunity to exchange cash dollars to pesos upon arriving in Chihuahua City. In addition, ATMs are located in Chihuahua and a few other towns. You may be able to use US dollars in some locations; bring smaller bills as many vendors do not carry change.

How much spending money will I need to bring?

Most expenses will be included with your program enrollment. All lodging, meals, transportation, gratuities and group museum and attraction entry fees are covered. You will need money for souvenirs and shopping, snacks, alcoholic beverages (if you wish), free time excursions and tipping for any additional services. Most participants who shop tend to purchase locally made crafts, which are sold for a few dollars apiece.

Can I use my credit cards in Mexico?

You will be able to use your credit cards at some locations, such as shops in Chihuahua City and hotel gift shops and cantinas. However, many vendors accept cash only.

Will I need to bring my original prescription bottles across the border?

No, you should have no problems transporting your medications across the border. Many of our participants find it convenient to bring divided pill containers for daily dosage.

Should I bring a gift to the home-hosted dinner?

Our Mexican host families are happy for the opportunity to share their homes and culture with you. In addition, they are compensated for the cost of the meal. Because they welcome so many participants into their homes, the families have requested no gifts. However, your host family will be happy to provide their mailing or e-mail address should you wish to send a thank-you note or photograph.

Are hair dryers provided in the hotels?

Some hotels have hair dryers in the rooms, and some do not. If you bring your own hair dryer, please be mindful that the electrical system in the hotel may be sensitive. Extensive use at high power could trigger a problem for the entire establishment.

Do the hotels have laundry facilities?

Most of the hotels do not have self-service laundry facilities. If necessary, you may be able to arrange laundry service through the front desk. We recommend that you bring a small container of powdered laundry detergent (to avoid spills in luggage) and a bungee cord for “sink laundry” in your hotel room.
